Beginning in the mid-1950s and ending in the late-1970s, Pop Art originated in New York with artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and more who were inspired by popular imagery drawn from current media and culture. Pop Art draws from these massive collections of recognizable imagery to eventually shift the direction of modern art. There is a curious overlap between Pop Art and advertising, as many of these artists used recognizable icons of media and culture found in advertisements. Pop art was the first movement to blur the lines between “high” and “low” culture, compounding on the notion that art should borrow from any sources that influence the individual.
